Unions.Org Blog» Blog Archive » Our Anti-Government Hypocrisy:

"by Harold Meyerson

Americans, the political scientists (and common sense) tell us, are ideologically conservative and operationally liberal. On the level of ideology, they’re opposed to government’s intervention in the economy. On the level of daily life, they support such universal government programs as Social Security and Medicare."

But this split between abstract beliefs and the concrete needs of daily life doesn’t just apply to government programs: It applies to government regulations as well. Last Thursday, the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press released a survey that revealed what Pew termed “Mixed Views of Government Regulation.” But “mixed,” in this case, means anti-regulatory in matters of ideology and pro-regulatory in practice. Asked whether they believed that government regulation of business was necessary to protect the public or that such regulation usually does more harm than good, just 40 percent answered that regulation was necessary, while 52 percent said it did more harm than good.

Locked-Out Workers to Embark on Journey for Justice | AFL-CIO NOW BLOG:

"More than six months ago, American Crystal Sugar Co. locked out more than 1,300 sugar beet workers in the Red River Valley of Minnesota and North Dakota. Two months ago, Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. locked out more than 1,000 workers in Findlay, Ohio. Last week, Caterpillar announced it would shut down a plant in Ontario, just over one month after locking out 500 workers. Rio Tinto Alcan locked out 750 workers in Quebec Jan. 1. HealthBridge locked out 800 nursing home workers in Connecticut in December. As Laura Clawson at the Daily Kos notes, “For evidence of a war on workers, look no further than the rise of the lockout.”"

Minnesota to Wisconsin: Journey for Justice | AFL-CIO NOW BLOG

Organizing & Bargaining | AFL-CIO NOW BLOG:

"Linda Jones went to work at Cooper Tire in Findlay, Ohio, 37 years ago. Nathan Rand was on the job for five years at the American Crystal Sugar plant in Hillsboro. N.D. Jones and 1,000 of her co-workers were locked out in August. American Crystal locked out Rand and 1,300 workers at seven plants in Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota in November."

“I couldn’t believe a place we worked so hard for would slap us in the face like we meant nothing to them,” says Jones in a telephone interview Thursday afternoon. She and Rand and six other Cooper and American Crystal workers were rolling down the road from Minnesota to Wisconsin as part of the 1,000 mile Journey for Justice

{so, what's the big deal? American Crystal Sugar is intent on negotiating a contract
that does away with seniority. this is the case even though Crystal has made record profits in 2011.
 does this sound familiar? it should. }

TMB Metro Transit Strike Averted At Mobile World Congress | TechCrunch:

"The metro workers from TMB have announced that they have reached agreement with the government and have voted overwhelmingly not to strike. The metro system will operate as normal during the GSMA Mobile World Congress, held 27th February through 1st March 2012.

There has not yet been a resolution between the bus workers and the government, and therefore the contingency plans announced at 9:00 am CET on Saturday, 25th February remain in place. The GSMA will update attendees should further information become available."

Study finds that budget plans proposed by Gingrich and Santorum lead to huge deficits - The Washington Post:

"That translates into a tax code in which taxes on investments and capital gains are sharply reduced or eliminated. Each Republican candidate would eliminate inheritance taxes on large estates. And tax rates on individuals would be cut as well — all in the face of deficits that economists say would eventually cripple the economy."

Brain - The Hippocampus - Epilepsy

Dear Family, Friends, Co-workers, Email Buddies, Union Brothers and Sisters,
It's time again to support The Cordova Crusaders.
I want to let you know that on Saturday, March 27 I will be in Washington, D.C.
I’ll be there for the Epilepsy Foundation's annual National Walk for Epilepsy.

As many of you are aware of, my oldest daughter, Dania, has epilepsy.

Every year I provide an update on Dania's health. I am happy to say that 2011 was a better year for her. Even though, Dania is still very challenged by epilepsy, it was a more stable year.  True to form, Daniacontinues living as normal a life as she can. Her strength and perseverance continues to astound me. Which makes this cause even more  important. With your continued support, the work of the Epilepsy Foundation can continue to find ways to  help all people who suffer from epilepsy live a more normal life. Donating to our team is a small way of helping all people stricken with the debilitating effects of epilepsy.

I am turning to you for your compassion and generosity. No donation is too small. Every little bit helps.

Please pass this email along to your friends and family and let them know that you know someone afflicted with epilepsy and their support will be greatly appreciated as well.

Please help the Cordova Crusaders reach our fundraising goals.
Thanking you all in advance.

Bill

There are several ways to donate:

Bill's Donation Page to visit my donation page, then click on ' SUPPORT BILL' . The donation will be applied to our team, Cordova Crusaders.

2. Make a check payable to Epilepsy Foundation and write 'Cordova Crusaders', on Memo line.
I will deliver your check to the foundation on the day of the walk.
Mail the check to:

Seeing the Forest:

The threat is in the air:
"Shut up and take the wage cuts or we will move your job to China."

... Workers in countries like China where people have no say have low wages,
terrible working conditions, long hours, and are told to shut up and take it or they won't have any job at all. They are given no choice.
Increasingly workers here have their wages, hours, benefits,

dignity cut and are told to shut up and take it or their jobs will be moved to China.

Because we are pitted against exploited workers in countries where people have no say, we have no choice.

The unions are weakened, the government doesn't enforce or weakly enforces labor laws and regulations,
age, gender or race discrimination laws, worker safety laws, so workers are placed in a terrible squeeze.
Workers who try to organize unions are isolated, moved, smeared, fired, humiliated, whatever it takes.
