Forward Progressives — Obama’s Claim about the Income of the Top 1% Compared to Typical Families Confirmed True:

"“The income of the top 1 percent nearly quadrupled from 1979 to 2007, but the typical family’s incomes barely budged.”
Which prompted the fact checking website Politifact to investigate his claim—and they found his statement to be true."

Mr. President, Have Pity on the Working Man | On Democracy, What Matters Today | BillMoyers.com

Mr. President, Have Pity on the Working Man | On Democracy, What Matters Today | BillMoyers.com:

"Privatization advocates tell the public that outsourcing government jobs to the private sector is good business and an efficient use of taxpayer dollars. Policymakers argue that when private firms compete for public contracts, market forces will prevail, and the government will get the goods and services it needs at the best possible prices.

But in fact, this “free market” system leads to a bookkeeping sleight-of-hand: Low-road contractors pay poverty level wages and provide no benefits for their employees, who then rely on food, housing, healthcare, and childcare subsidies from government agencies. Thus, the real costs of goods and services purchased under federal contracts are hidden, as are the thousands of workers who are trapped within this broken system."

McDonald's health insurance plans: not lovin' it - Oct. 5, 2010

McDonald's health insurance plans: not lovin' it - Oct. 5, 2010:

"The most affordable plan at McDonald's charges hourly workers about $14 a week, which comes to $727.48 annually. In return, they get $2,000 worth of coverage per year. If they step on a nail or come down with the flu, they might be covered, but the costs paid by the insurer may not even equal their premiums. If they are diagnosed with cancer, or even appendicitis, they are as vulnerable as someone with no insurance at all.

The "best" plan of the bunch costs $1,680 a year and caps benefits at $10,000. But for outpatient treatment (which often means the emergency room), benefits are capped at $2,000. A trip to the emergency room can zoom past that level in a matter of minutes."

Get a clue, McDonald’s: The other insult no one’s talking about - Salon.com

Get a clue, McDonald’s: The other insult no one’s talking about - Salon.com:

" . . .  the poor don’t need financial advice; they need higher wages. Yet apparently The Market – our all-seeing, beneficent Market, which declares that it is right and just that some men should have billions, while others sleep under bridges – has decided that higher wages for the working poor are an offense against all that we hold sacred.

Thus:  “Let them make budgets.”

McDonald's Can't Figure Out How Its Workers Survive on Minimum Wage - Jordan Weissmann - The Atlantic

McDonald's Can't Figure Out How Its Workers Survive on Minimum Wage - Jordan Weissmann - The Atlantic:

"Of course, minimum wage workers aren't really entirely on their own, especially if they have children. There are programs like food stamps, Medicaid, and the earned income tax credit to help them along. But that's sort of the point. When large companies make profits by paying their workers unlivable wages, we end up subsidizing their bottom lines. "

How to End the Student Loan Crisis: Make Wall Street Pay | Les Leopold

How to End the Student Loan Crisis: Make Wall Street Pay | Les Leopold:

"Anyone with a heartbeat knows that Wall Street took down the economy, killed millions of jobs and hasn't had to pay a penny for the damage it caused. In fact, we are paying them for crashing the economy in the form of trillions in bailouts and low interest loans.

Well, maybe it's time for Wall Street to contribute, rather than siphoning off our wealth. How about a sales tax on all transfers of stocks, bonds, and derivatives in order to fund tuition-free higher education at public institutions?"

Harold Meyerson: The American economy is eroding the American job - The Washington Post

Harold Meyerson: The American economy is eroding the American job - The Washington Post:

"Of the 195,000 jobs created in June, fully 75,000 came in “Leisure and Hospitality” — Labor Department-speak for hotels, restaurants, fast-food joints and bars. Workers in this sector averaged just 26.1 hours a week — a figure that hasn’t changed in the past 12 months, even as Obamacare’s deadlines drew nigh. Thirty-seven thousand retail jobs were added, and these workers put in, on average, 31.3 hours a week. Workers in manufacturing, by contrast, had full-time jobs, averaging 40.9 hours a week — but 6,000 manufacturing jobs were eliminated in June."
