LePage's Order to Remove Labor Mural Sparks Outrage

A decision by Gov. Paul LePage to remove a mural at the Department of Labor and to rename several conference rooms that honor national and local labor leaders has outraged everyone from union activists and the Maine Democratic Party to the director of the Francis Perkins Center in Newcastle. A spokesman for the governor says the decision is intended to make everyone feel welcome when they walk through the door. But the artist who planned the mural says it only depicts historical facts.

Meet the Ex-KKK Grand Dragon Running for Mayor in Fla. | Mother Jones

70-year-old John Paul Rogers wants to become the next mayor of Lake Wales, but critics say he could have a tough time bringing the town together because he's a former member of Ku Klux Klan.
Rogers, who is currently a commissioner, spoke with 10 News Tuesday afternoon and says, "I'm not running for the Klan for Grand Dragon." That's because Rogers has already had that title.

Lillian Roberts Urges City to Slash Waste in Contracts

Even as the Mayor threatens to balance the budget by cutting services and laying off city workers, Roberts said his recent budget proposal increases spending on outside contracts by $600 million in Fiscal Year 2012, pushing it up from the current $9.7 billion to $10.4 billion.

“The need to curtail waste in the city’s contract budget” Roberts added, “is small in comparison to the need to restore the confidence of taxpayers in a government that should put their interests over the interests of others, regardless of wealth and power. That need has never been greater.”

NAACP Statement on Announced Acquisition of T-Mobile USA by AT&T -- WASHINGTON, March 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --

Since the inception of the NAACP's Economic Reciprocity Initiative (ERI), where major industries are graded, AT&T has been among the highest ranked in the telecommunications industry for its commitment to diversity in terms of procurement, philanthropy, promotion and hiring at the local, state and national level. Other industry authorities such as Diversity Magazine,Black Enterprises, and Fortune Magazine have also given the company impressive marks. We also recognize that T-Mobile has consistently not done as well in our rating process. While past performance is no guarantee of future results, we are cautiously optimistic that AT&T's proven record and proposed commitment will truly benefit the acquired company's consumers, minority vendors and workers.

Restrictions on Public-Employee Unions in Wisconsin Become Law - WSJ.com

Under the law, unions said it will be more difficult for them to retain members. The new law requires that 51% of all eligible workers
—including those who don't vote—approve a union, which means unions can win a majority of votes cast, but still be barred from representing workers.
Previously unions had to win a majority of votes cast. The state also will stop collecting dues automatically as soon as contracts end.

Unions do more than fight for pay, pensions - Chicago Sun-Times

Unions do more than fight for pay, pensions - Chicago Sun-Times:

"But what is rarely addressed in nearly all of the popular stories and rhetoric about collective bargaining is that it is a very dynamic and flexible tool for problem solving.

We hear about the rancor over health care and pension payments for union workers, but never a word is uttered about the way that collective bargaining can be used to restructure work, increase efficiency or design productivity enhancements."

Wisconsin Governor Seeks $4.2 Billion in Cuts - WSJ.com:

"Critics said the governor's estimate is overstated, because some communities and school districts already require employees to pay more than 12.6% of their health-insurance premiums out of their salaries.

In De Pere, Wis., employees already pay 15% of insurance premiums from their wages. For that reason, and because police officers and firefighters are exempt, 'I believe the savings through pension-contribution increases will not be enough to offset the loss of state shared revenue,' De Pere Alderman Daniel Robinson wrote in a letter Monday to Republican state Sen. Robert Cowles."

New Jersey public workers in eye of benefit-cut storm | Philadelphia Inquirer | 03/01/2011: "The notion that state workers are overpaid and over-pensioned, Juravich said, is simply not true because pensions are modest. (New Jersey's Communications Workers of America retirees average $25,000 to $28,000.) And, he said, teachers are generally paid less than other workers with comparable educations.

The country is 'recalibrating. We need to have a tightening of the belt, but we have to be careful,' Juravich said.

Overly deep cuts could create an unproductive workforce and a dangerously deteriorated quality of government services, he said"

The Wisconsin Fight: What People of Color Have at Stake

Wisconsin Welcome SignImage via Wikipedia

"Workers of color already suffer due to less take-home pay, and these effects would only grow worse under Gov. Walker’s bill. A 2010 study by the Joint Center concluded that before the recession whites in Wisconsin held on average $116,246 in wealth while people of color averaged $5,706.

The sustained economic downturn has meant that people of color, like whites, have been forced to liquidate what little assets they could access with little room for recovery, fewer financial resources, and increased debt."
