Ann Romney: She and Mitt were so poor in college they had to liquidate some stock | Digg Politics:

During her remarks, Mrs. Romney was interrupted several times by cheering supporters. At the same time, though, the speech raises some dangers for the Romneys. Now that Ann is using the details of her domestic life for political purposes, journalists and Obama supporters are sure to focus on parts of that existence that might reflect less well on her and her husband. For example, she has said that when Mitt was in college, the two of them were so financially strapped that they had to liquidate some of their stock portfolio to get by. At the time Mrs. Romney said that she was engaged in a “struggle” to bring up her children, the family was living in a seven bedroom, six-and-a-half-bathroom mock-Colonial mansion in Belmont, Massachusetts, while spending summers at their five-thousand-square-foot vacation home, which sits on eleven lakefront acres in New Hampshire.

Troubling Favoritism in the U.S. Tax Code - NYTimes.com

Troubling Favoritism in the U.S. Tax Code - NYTimes.com:

"My adjusted gross income was higher than in 2010. Yet my overall tax rate went down. My alternative minimum tax also went down. Wasn’t the opposite supposed to happen — the more you make, the higher rate you should pay?

I called my accountant to double-check, but my returns were correct. This perverse outcome proves that what I’d already discovered about the ultrarich also holds true for people who are far from the million-dollar bracket: our tax code isn’t progressive. It’s not even flat. For people like me — and I assume there are millions of us — it’s regressive. For many people, the more you make, the lower the rate you pay."

End the Free Ride! | AFSCME:

"Working families pay our fair share of taxes every April while the ultra-wealthy and large corporations are paying less and less. In fact, many outsized firms and their executives pay a lower tax rate than their workers.

It’s an outrage. And it got us wondering, if General Electric paid its fair share in taxes like the rest of us this April, what could our communities do with the $2.67 billion in lost revenue?"

Taxes—Who Really Is Paying Up - WSJ.com

Taxes—Who Really Is Paying Up - WSJ.com: "What about those 46% who don't pay federal income tax?

Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center, says 23% of U.S. taxpayers don't make enough money to owe that tax once they take their personal exemption and standard deduction. Another 23% qualify for tax breaks that bring their bill to zero or provide a refund.

"They start off with relatively low income to begin with," Mr. Williams says, "and therefore have low tax liability before claiming any breaks."

Wealthier people face a tax rate as high as 35% on earnings, "but they get the biggest tax breaks," he says. "They start off with such a high tax that the biggest tax breaks don't bring them down to zero. They're benefiting hugely from tax breaks—much more than the poor people—but because they start off at the high level, their tax bills stay positive."

That said, 1,470 millionaires were among those who paid no federal income tax in 2009."

ALLENTOWN: Verizon hangs up on borough in tax dispute | CentralJersey.com

ALLENTOWN: Verizon hangs up on borough in tax dispute | CentralJersey.com:

"  Attorneys for Verizon filed a complaint against Allentown on March 22 in New Jersey Tax Court, seeking to have the company’s $46,190 business personal property tax assessment for 2012 invalidated. Verizon is the borough’s second-largest taxpayer, and its contributions to the borough’s coffers equal the annual municipal taxes of roughly 24 homes, according to borough Tax Assessor Vickie Butchon."

Verizon contends a change made to a 1940 state law 15 years ago permits the phone company to stop paying the business personal property tax to any town where it no longer is providing landline service to at least 51 percent of households.

”It’s ludicrous,” Mayor Stuart Fierstein said. “They’re essentially saying they are entitled to a tax exemption because their business is down.”

"This one's sure to boil some blood over at Walmart headquarters: A new study says there's a significant correlation between the amount of Walmart stores in an area and the number of hate groups existing in that same area. As the big-box stores proliferate, so do the groups."

The History Place - Child Labor in America: Investigative Photos of Lewis Hine:

 " Faces of Lost Youth"

From 1908 to 1912, Hine took his camera across America to photograph children as young as three years old working for long hours, often under dangerous conditions, in factories, mines, and fields. Hine was an immensely talented photographer who viewed his young subjects with the eye of a humanitarian.
In 1909, he published the first of many photo essays depicting working children at risk. In these photographs, the essence of wasted youth is apparent in the sorrowful and even angry faces of his subjects. Some of his images, such as the young girl in the mill glimpsing out the window, are among the most famous photographs ever taken.

Walker Repeals Wis. Equal Pay Protection:

As he campaigned across Wisconsin, Mitt Romney repeatedly praised Governor Scott Walker's leadership, calling him a "hero" and "a man of courage." But with his signing yesterday of a bill making it harder for women to enforce in court their right to equal pay, Walker showed how far Republicans are willing to go to undermine not only women's health care, but also their economic security. Does Romney think women should have the ability to take their bosses to court to get the same pay as their male co-workers? Or does he stand with Governor Walker against this?

Who We Are - The 99% SpringThe 99% Spring:

From April 9-15 we will gather across America, 100,000 strong, in homes, places of worship, campuses and the streets to join together in the work of reclaiming our country. We will organize trainings to:

Tell the story of our economy: how we got here, who’s responsible, what a different future could look like, and what we can do about it
Learn the history of non-violent direct action, and
Get into action on our own campaigns to win change.

This spring we rise! We will reshape our country with our own hands and feet, bodies and hearts. We will take non-violent action in the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi to forge a new destiny one block, one neighborhood, one city, one state at a time.

CorpWatch : Grey Market Drugs: Profiting from Poorly Managed U.S. Health Care

CorpWatch : Grey Market Drugs: Profiting from Poorly Managed U.S. Health Care:

One company, Florida-based Atlantic Biologicals, recently emailed a Vermont pharmacy offering shortage drugs that "are AVAILABLE. Of course quantities are limited," it noted. Account executive Lisy Nicolas, who described herself as "***YOUR #1 GO-TO GIRL!" offered the pharmacies "service that will amaze you.” The email concluded, without a hint of irony, "HAVE A JOY FILLED DAY!!!!" (Emphasis in original.)

Some drugs fetch more than others. The San Antonio Express- News reported an "astonishing markup of 6,213 percent," for the lifesaving leukemia drug Cytarabine, from a grey-market price faxed to pharmacists.

An Institute for Safe Medication Practices survey released in late August 2011 reported that some 52 percent of respondents had bought drugs on the gray market in the last two years. Price hikes in this grey market are estimated to average 650 percent , according to Premier.

Obama JOBS Act Leaves Labor Fuming In Democratic Feud

Obama JOBS Act Leaves Labor Fuming In Democratic Feud:

"But in deciding to back the JOBS Act, Democrats were forced to choose between two allies -- labor and the tech industry. Democrats stuck with Silicon Valley, secure in the belief that union loyalty isn't going anywhere. It's yet another political battle pitting nominal allies against one another because large sums of money are at stake."

Unions Struggle to Regroup As Verizon’s Hits Keep Coming | The Indypendent

Unions Struggle to Regroup As Verizon’s Hits Keep Coming | The Indypendent: "Bill Huber, president of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 827, believes the VCS layoffs are a foot in the door to lay off the better-compensated core techs.

Once the majority of VCS techs are fired, Verizon can change the job description of the few who are left and begin to lay off core workers.

In a meeting with union leaders, a Verizon official reportedly said that VCS is profitable; it’s just not profitable enough to appease Wall Street.

Verizon earned $20.5 billion over the last five years while paying its top five executives $258 million. In 2010 the company paid no federal income tax and received a $1.3 billion refund."
